Charleston has the luxury of being located near many of the places that make West Virginia “wild and wonderful” and Kanawha State Forest is no exception. Located just seven miles south of downtown, this state forest is a hidden gem and recreation haven. Celebrated among naturalists for its extensive wildflower and diverse bird populations, the 9,300 acre forest offers some of West Virginia’s best hiking trails in every season. In addition to hiking, visitors can mountain bike on nine different mountain biking trails. There are fishing opportunities at the two-acre Ellison Pond and hunters will find designated hunting areas in-season. Kanawha State Forest also has a public shooting range with covered shooting stalls. For the younger children, the forest features playground and picnic areas scattered throughout the area and there is an outdoor swimming pool which is open every weekend.
Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway or a quick day trip, we recommend a visit to Kanawha State Forest. Visitors can easily spend a few hours or an entire weekend exploring the area and discovering all of the activities the forest has to offer. The Wingate by Wyndham is about a 15-20 minute drive from Kanawha State Forest. Please stop by our front desk to ask for directions or to learn about any seasonal events that may be taking place in the forest.
