The Marshall University - South Charleston Campus is a non-residential branch of the Marshall University campus located in South Charleston, West Virginia that is primarily focused on offering graduate programs, but also takes part in undergraduate courses as well. Marshall offers its graduate level programs throughout West Virginia, but wanted to focus on offering courses in the metropolitan area of Charleston prior to 1969. In that year, the state reorganized its extension graduate system where West Virginia University was left to offer its graduate programs, for the most part in the northern part of the state. Marshall was limited to the four counties surrounding its main campus in Huntington for its extension programs, so as a result the small College of Graduate Studies was founded.
The college, at first, had no campus of its own, and almost no faculty. It had some offices at West Virginia State College and offered classes on that campus and at locations throughout the rest of southern West Virginia, drawing its faculty from schools like West Virginia State College, Concord College, Bluefield State College, Glenville State College and other surrounding institutions. The newly formed graduate school also utilized adjunct faculty drawn from industry in the Kanawha Valley region. In 1992 the school got a campus of its own, moving to land donated by the Union Carbide Corporation near its research facility. The next year, the state again reorganized its graduate education system, merging the West Virginia Graduate College and the on-campus graduate programs of Marshall University under the name Marshall University Graduate College. In 2010 the state authorized Marshall to begin offering extension undergraduate programs at the South Charleston location, and the facility was renamed the Marshall University - South Charleston Campus, and commonly now known as "Marshall-South Charleston". The school could not be better fit for those who have just graduated from the university and want to further their studies, but are still working in the Charleston area. The central location is great for commuting and is just 5 minutes from the Wingate by Wyndham.
