The Kanawha Players is the second oldest, continuously operating amateur theater company in the country. Since 1922, and even through the Great Depression, the Kanawha Players have kept entertaining the general public. Their mission is to produce quality theater in a nurturing community environment, while providing a place for education, training and encouragement to those interested in participating in the dramatic arts. First constructed by volunteers in the 1940s, their workshop was on 5315 MacCorkle Avenue. It remained untouched for the greater part of 60 years until 2002 when another group of volunteers renovated it and gave it a bright new interior. In 2005, the Kanawha Players bought and began to restore a former church at the corner of Beauregard and Washington Streets to serve as new workshop space and a place for future performances.
Today the Kanawha Players are entering their 90th season! Together with a new President, new Board of Directors, and a team of volunteers from the community, they plan to continue their long-standing tradition of bringing quality community theatre to West Virginia, as well as improving our community relations and involving the public as much as possible.
