Nitro War Museum

The Nitro War Museum, located in room 100 of the Nitro Community Center, is home to some artifacts and history during the World War I era. Nitro was born a "Boom Town" during America’s mobilization for World War I. Its very name stands as a reminder of its sudden and explosive beginning. Shortly after the United States entered the war, it became apparent that America faced a critical shortage in gunpowder production. When it was determined the country could not produce enough powder to supply troops in combat, Congress went into an emergency session and passed the "Deficiency Appropriations Act" on October 6, 1917. The Appropriations Act provided for the creation of three huge explosive plants, capable of producing around 500,000 pounds of gunpowder per day.

Due to its security from coastal attacks, climatic conditions, rail and water transportation, available raw materials, and the lay of the land, it was determined that the area that would soon become Nitro would be the location of one of the plants. The name Nitro was selected by the Ordnance Department. It was derived from the chemical term Nitro-Cellulose, which identified the type of gunpowder that was to be produced. During wartime production, everything in the up and coming small town was bustling. Many people from all over the country were flocking in to work at the plant, the output of the plant was great, and a community was arising out of seemingly nothing. The Nitro War Museum documents all this when you stop in to take a visit. The museum provides a great way to learn about the origins and history of a small town in the greater Charleston area.
