West Virginia University Institute of Technology is located in the small yet mountainous town of Montgomery, West Virginia. The four year institution is the largest regional campus of West Virginia University, seeing that it is still governed by the WVU Board of Trustees, but Tech (as it is known locally) is separately accredited from the main campus of WVU in Morgantown. The school started out being founded at the sub-college level as the Montgomery Preparatory School of WVU in 1895. A few years later, it was separated from WVU and became a trade school.
In 1921, Tech reached the junior college level as the New River State School and became a four-year college just ten years later. Finally it was renamed the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1941 and began to grant degrees in engineering in 1952. The school added a community college in 1966 and began to grant the master's degree in engineering a few years after that. In 1996 the college became a regional campus of West Virginia University. On July 1, 2007, WVU Tech became a full division of WVU. While several departments on campus report directly to WVU, oversight of all academic areas has remained on Tech's main campus.
