In the final stretch of my Appalachian Trail (AT) hike, I arrived at Shaw's, a quaint hostel nestled in the heart of the trail. This was the 125th day of my journey, and I was eager to make the most of it. My plan was to cover 18 miles, a modest distance, but the flat terrain profile suggested a swift journey. And indeed, my hopes were realized as the trail into Shaw's was a gentle breeze, with a few roots and rocks to navigate.
Shaw's is the epitome of an AT hostel, and I was fortunate to experience it early in my hike, just after the SOBOs (Southbound hikers) complete the 100-mile wilderness section. The hostel is owned by Poet's Gear Emporium, a one-stop shop for all things trail-related, catering to both SOBOs and NOBOs (Northbound hikers). The proprietor, Poet, is a thoughtful and helpful soul, offering polite suggestions without being intrusive. His expertise and hospitality made my stay at Shaw's truly memorable.
After settling in, I focused on my resupply. I carefully selected my trail food, adding a Peak meal and an extra 660 snack calories per day to my diet. I also indulged in some town food, including a pound of deli salads, a lobster roll, and a chicken pot pie to satisfy my cravings. It was a delightful contrast to the usual trail fare.
As I prepared for the next leg of my journey, I couldn't help but reflect on the significance of Shaw's. It was more than just a place to rest; it was a symbol of the camaraderie and support that the AT community fosters. The hostel's atmosphere, combined with the helpfulness of Poet and the abundance of trail supplies, created a sense of belonging and camaraderie that is rare and special.
The AT hike is a journey of discovery, both physically and mentally. Shaw's, with its welcoming atmosphere and practical amenities, is a testament to the trail's ability to bring people together. It is a place where hikers can recharge, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world. As I ventured into the 100-mile wilderness, I felt a sense of anticipation and gratitude for the experiences that lay ahead.
In my opinion, Shaw's is a must-visit destination for any AT hiker. It is a place where the trail's magic comes alive, and the sense of community is palpable. As I continued my journey, I carried with me the memories of Shaw's, knowing that it would forever hold a special place in my heart and the hearts of all who have walked its paths.
