Kaurna Cultural Immersion: Empowering Students in Adelaide's South (2026)

A powerful cultural awakening is taking place in Adelaide's south, and it's igniting a spark in the hearts of high school students. Imagine a serene setting, where the only sounds are the whispers of the wind and the sweet melodies of birdsong. Here, a group of students from Seaford Secondary College are embarking on a journey to discover the ancient art of making fire, guided by the wise elder, Karl Winda Telfer.

"They're delving into the world of fire, learning the traditional methods, and honoring their ancestors through this sacred ceremony," Karl shares. But this is just the beginning of a unique program called Tikkandi, a cultural immersion experience that goes beyond the classroom.

Tikkandi, which translates to "sitting down on country," is a bi-cultural education initiative that connects students with their Kaurna heritage, language, and the land itself. "It's about empowering these young individuals with a sense of cultural identity and responsibility," Karl explains. "By understanding their connection to the land and their community, they can navigate life with strength and purpose."

After the fire ceremony, the students are led to a majestic grandmother tree, a giant gum that stands tall amidst the vineyards. Karl encourages the students to connect with the tree and the land, a moment of profound reflection.

"It's a peaceful experience, almost like a spiritual connection with our ancestors," shares student Mia Oake. "It helps me find inner peace and understand my emotions and those of others," adds her friend, Mia Zito.

Kanyanyapilla, the site where this program takes place, is a special place for Karl and his family. It translates to "place of many eagles" and holds deep cultural significance as an ancient campground for his ancestors. "This is a place of connection, a place where our bloodline to the land is honored," Karl says. "It's a powerful return to our roots."

Karl and his partner, Claire Lock, have dedicated themselves to regenerating this site with native plants, and the students are actively involved in this ecological restoration process. "They're learning by doing," Claire explains. "They're caring for the land, planting, creating paths, and understanding the science behind it all."

The impact of this program extends beyond the site. The students have taken their newfound knowledge and skills back to their school, creating a cultural garden that has become a cherished project for the entire school community. "It's incredible to see the confidence and enthusiasm these students have gained," says Alema Pilot, the Aboriginal secondary education officer at Seaford Secondary College. "We want to empower them to embrace their culture and their connection to country."

Emma Sewer, the Aboriginal education teacher, adds, "The students have truly embraced this opportunity. They've transferred their knowledge and passion back to the school, creating a cultural garden that is now a source of pride for everyone."

The students themselves are enthusiastic about the program. "I feel so lucky to be a part of this. Learning about my culture and feeling a sense of belonging is an incredible experience," shares Jamahrian Lee-Satour. "It's like I've found my place," adds Mia Oake.

As the program prepares to resume next year, the impact it has had on these students and their community is undeniable. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural education and the profound connections it can foster.
