Rivian's R2 prototypes have hit the media, revealing new performance specs as a Tesla Model Y competitor. The all-electric SUV is set to be the most affordable option from the American automaker, with a planned launch in 2026. Since its announcement, Rivian has been sharing performance targets and other details ahead of its launch. In January, the company started producing validation prototypes in Normal, Illinois, marking a significant milestone in the development of the R2. The prototypes have been driven by a select few in the digital media, providing valuable insights into the vehicle's potential performance specs. While the R2 vehicles driven were prototypes, the specs noted may not match the production model's final specifications. Rivian has not shared many performance specs for the production R2, nor has it provided details on trim variations or pricing. However, based on the drives in the prototypes and previous statements by Rivian, here are some of the R2 specs we have gathered: EV Architecture: 400V (Completely bespoke), Battery size: 87.4 kWh, Powertrain: Dual Motor AWD, Power: 656 hp, Torque: 609 lb-ft, 0-60 mph Acceleration: 3.6 seconds. The R2 also features a new multi-link suspension, new batteries, and the new Maximus electric drive unit. From a user-gadget standpoint, the rear window goes down, but the rear side windows do not fan out. The steering wheel has been equipped with new haptic wheels, which received mixed reviews. Rivian is set to strut its stuff at SXSW 2026, where we are sure to learn more about the R2, including more specs and, hopefully, pricing.
