The resilience of St Albans' pub scene is a fascinating story, and one that deserves to be told. A city with a rich history of public houses, St Albans has managed to maintain its vibrant pub culture, despite the challenges of time and changing social norms.
An exhibition, titled 'Inns & Alehouses in Victorian St Albans', showcases the city's remarkable ability to adapt and preserve its beloved pubs. The display takes visitors on a journey through time, starting from the early 19th century when there were around 40 drinking establishments, to the late Victorian era when the city boasted nearly 100 pubs. Today, an impressive 34 pubs still thrive within a mile of the city center, a testament to the city's enduring love for its local pubs.
Curator David Thorold highlights the stabilization of pub numbers, stating, "It's a testament to how well [the city's] pubs have adapted and stood the test of time." He goes on to explain how publicans who diversified their offerings were the ones who survived the changing landscape.
One such example is The Peahen, an old coaching inn that has been operational since at least the 15th century. The Peahen adapted by letting out space inside the building for shops and also became a hub for social organizations like the football and cricket clubs. Another fascinating transformation is that of the Lower Red Lion, which started as a pub in a house and evolved into a coaching inn, showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit of its owners.
But here's where it gets controversial... While some pubs adapted and thrived, others struggled to keep up with the changing times. The exhibition explores the rise and fall of pub numbers, highlighting the impact of social, cultural, and economic changes. New licensing laws and the Beer Act led to an explosion of smaller establishments, but improved road links and the rise of railways reduced the need for overnight stays. Additionally, the Temperance Movement sought to reduce alcohol consumption, offering safer alternatives to alcohol.
At its peak, there were simply too many establishments to sustain, and it was the diverse and adaptable publicans who survived. Mr. Thorold notes, "They seem to have bought a neighboring house and widened it out, owners who thought 'there's money in this business, we could get some of that as well.'"
The ability of pubs to reinvent themselves while remaining at the heart of social life is what makes them such enduring fixtures in communities across the UK. Sean Hughes from Save St Albans Pubs emphasizes the cultural heritage and the meeting point that pubs provide, stating, "For over 1,000 years, we've had pubs in the heart of St Albans that have been a meeting point for millions of people."
