Kazu Hiro, a master of prosthetic makeup design, faced a tough decision: create an exact replica of Mark Kerr or capture his essence. Hiro explains, "It's a delicate balance when we attempt a likeness. I could've gone in so many directions, but practicality had to be considered.
And boy, did he deliver! Hiro crafted two makeup versions, one an exact match and another a subtle interpretation. The subtle approach won out, requiring less prosthetics but a whole lot of makeup artistry to achieve the desired look.
The Physical Transformation: More Than Meets the Eye
To bring Kerr's physicality to life, Hiro had to account for eye swelling, a broken nose, and a missing tooth. It was a delicate dance of makeup stages, touch-ups, and repairs. But why stop there? Hiro also had to tackle the challenge of sweat! Each fight scene presented its own unique physical characteristics, and Hiro had to figure out the sweat chemistry to ensure the makeup stayed put.
"We learned where the sweat would detach first, so we had to use different adhesives to withstand the sweating," Hiro reveals. "Dwayne's head sweats a lot, but his face is more manageable. We worked with Glen Griffin to find the perfect adhesive combo.
And let's not forget about the tattoos! Dwayne's body art had to be covered up, and then Mark Kerr's tattoos were added on top. It was a true test of makeup artistry.
The Prosthetic Pieces: A Work of Art
In total, 22 prosthetic pieces and a wig were applied to Dwayne Johnson, all thanks to a team of nearly 20 makeup artists working tirelessly for four hours each day. This included a new brow bone, scars, and a cauliflower ear. But the real challenge was the prosthetic eyelid.
"The thickness was almost half an inch, so we had to create a core piece that attached to the positive mold to allow for natural blinking," Hiro explains. And that's not all; a separate prosthetic was used to represent eye swelling during fights, applied in real time as the scene progressed.
And let's not forget the bald cap! Hiro crafted a silicone cap with individual hair strands, allowing a real barber to shave Johnson's head for a scene.
The Challenges of On-Set Work
Even with all the preparation, accidents happened. "One time, the tip of Dwayne's nose came off, and we had to repair it multiple times," Hiro recalls.
