In a vibrant fusion of art and functionality, designer Gabriella Marcella has crafted a unique workspace that embodies her creative vision. Her transformation of an industrial unit in Glasgow into the Risotto print studio is a testament to her bold and innovative approach to design.
A Colorful Journey
Marcella's journey began at the Glue Factory creative hub, where she graduated 14 years ago. Fast forward to the present, and she has seized the opportunity to create a space that reflects her vibrant visual style and practical needs.
"The Green Room" is the heart of this project, a stepped volume that houses the printers and paper storage. It's a brilliant example of form meeting function, resembling the iconic tetromino blocks from Tetris. This central element is surrounded by an open, adaptable workspace, allowing Marcella and her team to configure the area according to their needs.
Flexibility and Adaptability
One of the key strengths of the Risotto studio is its flexibility. Marcella has ensured that almost everything in the space is mobile, from storage units to tables. This adaptability allows the studio to accommodate various activities, from hosting workshops to fulfilling commissions.
"I wanted the space to be versatile," Marcella explains. "The ability to move things around means we can easily adapt to different projects and keep the workflow efficient, even with a small team."
Industrial Aesthetics
The studio's design draws inspiration from the visual language of old factories and workshops. Marcella has incorporated utilitarian elements like flap curtains and ladders, adding a playful yet practical touch. The use of salvaged terrazzo tiles brings a tactile and aged feel to the space, creating an interesting contrast with the bright, colorful furniture.
Collaboration and Community
Marcella's work extends beyond the studio walls. The opening of the Risotto workshop coincided with an exhibition at the Glue Factory Galleries, showcasing the diverse range of artists involved in the Riso Club subscription project. This initiative has created a global community of artists, offering an alternative platform for risograph artwork and photography.
"Riso Club has been a fantastic way to connect with artists worldwide and present their unique styles," Marcella says. "It's a great example of how collaboration and community can enhance and inspire creative practices."
